Kathleen, a youth services librarian, briefed the board on Club Curiosity’s summer program and its May 30 kickoff. She said the program runs from May 30 to Aug. 1 for participants birth through age 17 and uses age-customized activity trackers and weekly prizes; branch-based grand-prize drawings will produce 21 total winners.
"We had over 1,400 people attend the event," Kathleen said, noting turnout far exceeded staff expectations (the team had expected roughly 650). She said volunteers and partners supported the event: 566 kids picked up week 1 activity trackers, about 400 accepted a free popsicle before supplies ran out, Altrusa distributed 588 books and 25 teen volunteers helped run activities.
Kathleen described dinosaur photo‑ops, crafts, face painting, a Parks DJ and food-truck accommodations; GISD participated with demonstrations from a student nutrition chef to promote summer meals. She noted grants helped cover performer and prize costs—she cited a $1,500 TLA/HEB grant for prizes and a Texas Commission on the Arts grant that covers roughly half of performer fees.
Board members praised the turnout and discussed better photo and social-media alignment with future events; staff said they will report follow-up statistics at a future meeting.
