Michelle Mitchell, executive director of the Natadors, asked the commission to rename just the diving well at the Marguerite Aquatics Complex for Dr. Ron O'Brien, who she described as a founding figure in the club's history and an eight-time Olympic coach with many athletes from Mission Viejo.
"He was also an 8 time Olympic coach," Mitchell said, noting that nine Olympians came from Mission Viejo under O'Brien's mentorship. Mitchell said the Natadors would pay for the lettering and materials while the city would manage any installation into the city facility. Commissioners supported the tribute, discussed timing to coincide with the junior national championships, and asked staff to return cost estimates and a design for council review.
The commission moved and approved the naming recommendation 7–0; staff noted the normal council process for renaming city property and said final installation details and costs would be worked out with the city's facilities and design teams.
