Board reviews updated bullying policy to explicitly prohibit discrimination, harassment and cyberbullying

Staff presented a proposed update to BP 5131.2 that would explicitly prohibit discrimination, harassment and intimidation in school policies and encourage family engagement and reporting for bullying and cyberbullying.
District staff presented revisions to BP 5131.2 to expand the bullying policy to explicitly prohibit discrimination, harassment, intimidation and cyberbullying and to encourage family involvement in modeling respectful behavior and monitoring social media risks.
"It updates the bullying policy requiring that our policy specifically prohibit discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying, including acts of the governing board and superintendent in enacting policies and procedures that govern the district," the presenter said. Board members asked whether cyberbullying would be discussed with families at freshman orientation and discussed using brief parent-facing PSAs and Spanish-language materials to improve parental awareness. Staff said assemblies for students are mandatory and the district already uses an anonymous QR-code tip line for reporting.
