Santa Ynez Valley board reviews first reading to list entertainment work as an excused absence

Staff said the change moves the district from a discretionary approach to an enumerated rule so students who work in entertainment-related jobs have a clear path to excuse.
"Work in the entertainment or allied industry is now an enumerated excuse," the staff member said during the presentation. The proposal also requires teachers to provide "identical or equivalent assignments and tests" when a student has an excused absence; staff emphasized that the policy does not remove existing requirements that students hold a work permit to engage in employment.
The presentation was a first reading; the board did not take a final vote. Board members asked staff to clarify implementation details and safeguards to ensure instructional equity across courses before a final adoption.
