Council declines to vacate Mayfair Crown Drive right-of-way, cites maintenance and VDOT implications

Staff presented detailed background on a resident request to vacate or convey roughly 7,000 square feet of public right-of-way at the western terminus of Mayfair Crown Drive. Planner Andrea Broshkovich explained that the right-of-way was dedicated during subdivision approval, that it contains sidewalks, water lines, trails and stormwater infrastructure, and that vacating it would forfeit eligibility for VDOT urban maintenance funds and likely shift maintenance costs to the town or require easements.
After council debate stressing potential loss of VDOT funding and emergency-access and planning concerns, Council Member Stout moved, and the council voted unanimously, to direct staff to continue maintaining the existing Mayfair Crown Drive right-of-way and to decline any proposed vacation or conveyance. "If the town were to vacate this right of way, it would forfeit operating budget," Broshkovich warned during her presentation.
