The Shelby County Commission advanced an ordinance on first reading to establish pay parity between correctional officers employed by the Shelby County Division of Corrections and corrections deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
Commissioner Eric Sugarman presented the ordinance (Item 22), describing it as a codification of a prior signed resolution intended to ensure parity for corrections staff. The proposal would amend Chapter 14 of the Shelby County Code to align pay for SCDC correctional officers with SCSO corrections deputies; the item passed first reading and will return for a second reading.
Michelle (Hope) Shaw, representing AFSCME and correctional officers, testified in support. Shaw told commissioners that corrections staff "do the same job" as the sheriff's deputies housed within the same facility and noted that previous parity commitments had not been applied equally when additional raises were later granted to sheriff's employees. Shaw asked the commission to treat corrections officers as equals and to correct disparities.
Commissioners said the ordinance will replace a prior resolution and ensure the parity becomes part of the county code so future raises must be budgeted and administered in parity going forward. Because this was a first reading, the commission will consider final adoption on second reading at a later meeting.
