Brittany Peterson, Director of the Richland County Health Department, told the council that the department will carry out a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) this summer to gather neighborhood-level data on health needs and emergency preparedness.
Sammy Abel, an AmeriCorps member working with the department, said "volunteers would go door-to-door conducting surveys beginning June 9, 2026, and that the information gathered would be used to assist with the Community Health Improvement Plan." Abel said volunteers will work in teams paired with a Health Department representative and that training, food and refreshments will be provided. The department also said the assessment helps maintain the health department’s public-health accreditation status.
Council did not take a formal vote on the presentation; members asked staff to share volunteer sign-up details and scheduling information so residents can participate.
