Malibu Education Foundation reports $300K raised so far, 50% year‑over‑year increase

Karen Lehi Harden, interim executive director of the Malibu Education Foundation, presented the foundation's quarterly fundraising update to the board on Feb. 5.
"From July 1 through January 31, Malibu Education Foundation has raised a little over $300,000 in funds," Harden said, and told the board the figure represented approximately a 50% increase year over year. She noted $330,000 listed as committed funding (signed pledges or expected grants) and explained MEF is prioritizing student-facing staffing and programs, building two endowments and planning an annual gala for October.
Harden said MEF is focusing on instructional aides, athletics, arts support and math tutors in areas not fully funded by public sources and emphasized conservative budgeting as the foundation transitions to longer-term fundraising.
Board members asked whether progress around unification had affected donations; Harden said she had not yet seen data tying unification to increased giving but noted early community interest in the idea.
