Board adopts ceremonial resolutions for MLK Day, Holocaust Remembrance Day and Korematsu Day

Board member Laurie Lieberman introduced three ceremonial resolutions for adoption by the Santa Monica–Malibu Unified School District Board.
The board approved a resolution commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and urging schools and the broader community to embody values of reconciliation and respect. Next, the board adopted a resolution proclaiming Jan. 27, 2026, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in district schools and reaffirmed the district’s commitment to combating antisemitism and intolerance. Finally, the board approved a resolution encouraging observance of Fred T. Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution on Jan. 30 each year and recommended classroom exercises to recognize civil liberties and constitutional protections. Each resolution received a second and passed on a roll-call vote with all members voting yes.
"Let it be resolved that the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America," Lieberman read when moving the MLK resolution. The board confirmed the three resolutions during the same consent of motions process.
