Franklin Elementary principal highlights values program, student leadership and PBIS work

Natalie Burton, Franklin Elementary School principal, presented the school’s recognition and a summary of programs and priorities to the Santa Monica–Malibu Unified School District Board.
Burton described a values program that rotates monthly themes (this month: honesty) and student-centered activities such as assemblies, student government days and monthly recognition for students who demonstrate the district’s values. She said staff are using LCAP funds to support a book study and professional development and that Franklin is “the largest elementary school, by far.” Burton invited board members to upcoming events and noted the Move-a-thon fundraiser scheduled for 08:30 tomorrow.
Burton also described schoolwide PBIS and restorative-justice work coordinated with district student services and partners, saying staff conducted classroom visits, surveys and interviews to design interventions. Liz Cochran (Franklin staff) summarized a “living literature” activity that uses diverse books to teach values and to surface student voice in classroom instruction: teachers record brief student videos, analyze preferences for learning and adapt activities such as math games and peer teaching.
Board members thanked Burton, offered facility‑related suggestions for integrating construction into student learning, and encouraged the school to share its recommended literature and classroom resources with the board. "We are the largest elementary school, by far," Burton said during her presentation.
