Board reviews proposed updates to curriculum, civics and accountability policies; action set for Jan. 22

Doctor Benjamin presented proposed updates to multiple BPs and ARs that align district policy with California School Board Association recommendations and recent state law. The package included revisions to BP 6120 (response to instruction and intervention), creation of AR 6141 on curriculum development and evaluation, world language instruction policy (BP/AR 6142.2) describing immersion and dual pathways, AP access language and reduced exam costs for eligible low‑income students, and additions to civic education policy that require balanced presentation of controversial topics and student voter registration outreach.
Benjamin told the board the updates reflect state guidance and current law and that the materials will return for action and information on January 22, 2026. Doctor O'Grady later presented companion accountability updates to LCAP and related policies, including new law provisions for learning recovery funds and SARC translation requirements when 15% or more of a school's students speak a single language other than English. Board members asked clarifying questions and thanked staff for condensing a large package into a rapid review.
