Auditors flag independent-study contract language gaps; district says corrective plan in place

Auditors told the board that several independent-study agreements in the audit sample lacked elements required by Education Code and the state audit guide, producing a sample-calculated question cost of $10,450.
"Contracts that came up in our sample contain various language that is not in full alignment with what's being required by the state," Ben Levitt said, describing missing statements such as maximum time between assignment and completion and explicit academic-credit language in some long-term agreements.
Assistant Superintendent Gerardo Cruz and the district's education and student-services staff said they have prepared a corrective-action plan. Dr. Williamson noted recent changes in state law and program guidance (including SB 153 revisions since COVID) that required updates to documentation, and Dr. Mesa described training and a program handbook the district has developed to improve compliance and staff practice.
