The Santa Monica‑Malibu Unified School District board announced it approved a purchase agreement to acquire 814 25th Street, a property immediately adjacent to Franklin Elementary, for a purchase price of $2,800,000. Board President Jennifer Smith read the closed‑session action at the start of the meeting, noting funding will come from one‑time capital outlay funds (Fund 40) and not from voter‑approved general obligation bonds or general funds.
“The purchase price is $2,800,000,” Jennifer Smith read to the board and audience. The district said it will allow the current owner to remain on the property through November 2027. The board also said the district has not yet determined the property’s ultimate use; staff will return to the board with recommendations for immediate and future uses and will complete any required entitlements, including CEQA, before occupying or changing the current use.
The closed‑session motion was moved and seconded (moved by Mr. Keane; seconded by Ms. Mignano) and the board recorded the vote announced at the meeting: five ayes in favor, one no (Leon Vasquez), and one member absent (Rouse). The board described the acquisition as an opportunity to expand a tight campus to support student learning and projected enrollment growth.
