Board approves $6.46M state health department core funding match and budget amendment

The Department of Community Resources presented a public hearing and proposed budget amendment to meet the state's annual core funding match for the Calvert County Health Department. Jennifer Moreland, director of Community Resources, explained the county received the state's annual core agreement that requests a total match; staff proposed moving $777,004 from a prior‑year fund balance to cover the county's portion. Deputy health staff outlined planned uses for the funds including bolstering nursing staff, hiring an epidemiologist and adding a public information officer and community health workers.
Thomas Cutty, deputy director (public health), detailed program priorities and said the funds would strengthen infectious‑disease monitoring and materal‑child health activities. "We're using these dollars to fill an open epidemiologist position," Cutty said, and added that some allocations may shift if other federal grants are cut. A public commenter urged more online documentation of budget adjustments; the board closed the record and approved the budget amendment and the president's signature on the core agreement with the state.
