Calvert Health touts five-star CMS rating and growth steps in strategic plan update

Calvert Health presented a multi-year strategic-plan progress report to the Board of County Commissioners, highlighting national recognitions and local expansions in clinical capacity and services.

President and CEO Jeremy Bradford described recent achievements: “We were named 1 of the top 100 hospitals in the country listed by Forbes,” and he said the system earned a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services — putting the hospital among the top 10% of evaluated hospitals. Bradford credited the recognition to quality and patient-safety efforts and to a staff of about 1,200 people including physicians and volunteers.

Calvert Health leaders described operational metrics for FY24 (about 5,300 admissions, roughly 36,000 emergency visits, and more than 85,000 medical-group visits). The hospital also reported opening clinical trials (two trials opened; 14 patients accrued to the first), a multidisciplinary breast clinic, expanded bariatric and weight-management sites, new orthopedic services, and a 15,000-square-foot women's center opened this summer.

Officials said recruiting remains a priority: the system added six new primary care clinicians recently and is working with partners and third-party recruiters to attract specialists and address staffing shortages. They emphasized local partnerships (Duke collaboration, Shepherd Pratt for behavioral health) and community outreach as central to ongoing growth.

Commissioners praised the hospital’s community engagement and noted upcoming construction and renovation work tied to the strategic plan; Calvert Health said it will continue to report progress to its board and to the county.
