Commissioners press Alabama Power over Sandy Road pole work that may close road for weeks

County staff and commissioners expressed concern about Alabama Power's plan to install large distribution poles on Sandy Road and the project's potential impact on emergency access and daily traffic. Dan, the county engineer, told the commission that 21–23 of the poles would require the roadway to be shut for about six hours at a time and that the crane and outriggers needed for installation would occupy the right-of-way.
"They're gonna have that road shut down for 6 hours a day, basically," Dan said, noting the work may run for at least 21 days in the staging the company proposed. Commissioners asked staff to return with alternatives, including weekend work, temporary pads or additional easements so at least one lane could remain open; staff also raised the possibility of asking the company to sign an indemnity or non‑indemnify agreement if emergency response times might be extended.
