Caleb Patterson, the town's new manager, outlined an onboarding plan and early priorities after trustees added Item 2.5 to the agenda for his swearing-in. Patterson said he will ask staff to submit reports one week before meetings and recommended workshops before select board meetings so he can respect trustees' time while discussing complex items.
"I'm gonna ask from you guys, which we will go over...keep it to once a month as I get adjusted here," Patterson said after introducing a two-sheet goals worksheet he asked trustees to complete. He told the board he already reviewed the chart of accounts and believes the town has "too many accounts open" for an $800,000 budget, and that he will work with department heads and the auditor to identify unnecessary accounts.
Patterson also proposed standardizing reporting formats and creating a time-grid to set realistic time frames for work plans. Trustees agreed to schedule a work session in mid-March to set goals, with Patterson asking for trustee input a week before that session. "I think a week at the latest would be great," Patterson said when discussing deadlines for delivering goals to staff.
