The Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners Personnel Special Committee reviewed recommendations for filling the County Administrator/CFO vacancy during a meeting called to order by Chair Scott Matley at 10:02 a.m. on May 28. Matley provided a graph comparing former Administrator/CFO compensation and proposed options; the document listed the former employee total cost at $139,460.00 and a recommended contractual package at $139,460.00 with no county benefits.
Committee members noted the former contract referenced a 7.9% retirement-fund contribution rather than an 8.6% figure that had been circulated. Commissioners debated whether offering a contractual arrangement without benefits could yield cost savings while still making the position competitive enough to retain a qualified Administrator/CFO. Robert Baldwin said a contractual position could produce savings and that the recommended wage might be negotiable in the contracting process; Jeff Sieting suggested sheriff wage and stipend issues should be addressed separately with the incoming sheriff.
Clerk Deborah Hill outlined that any employee-side negotiations will follow comparison-county processes during upcoming union negotiations. The committee discussed advertising the vacancy and whether to recruit for an employee position or a contractual post; they did not make a final hiring decision at the meeting but agreed further consideration was required. The committee recorded consensus to consider a special meeting on June 4 to finalize pay, benefits, job description and advertising plans.
The meeting record shows public participation on Zoom from Annie Wallace, who "noted good discussion," and the committee adjourned at 10:55 a.m. after a motion by Robert Baldwin supported by Jeff Sieting; the adjournment carried 3โ0.
