Board hears measles surge and low local coverage; staff to review registry for missed doses

The Board of Health received a communicable-disease update April 9 highlighting a national measles increase and local outreach plans. "To date, nationally there are 607 cases of measles. 97% of these are unvaccinated," Health Officer Amy Kleiber reported, and she said local staff are combing the immunization registry to identify individuals who may have missed doses.
Kleiber told board members that most hospitalizations in the current outbreak are children under five and that about 12% of cases nationally have required hospitalization. Board members asked whether measles poses higher risks to children compared with adults; Kleiber confirmed that children face greater risk. The board discussed community trust and vaccine hesitancy after COVID; Kleiber encouraged residents to consult trusted medical providers and official sources. The department plans direct outreach to those identified in the registry.
