Oconto County adopts zoning changes adding annual permits for recreational vehicles

The Oconto County Board of Supervisors on April 23 adopted O2026-04-01, a revision to Chapter 14 of the county zoning ordinance that adds new standards for recreational vehicles and camping units.
The ordinance, approved by an electronic vote of 26 ayes and 3 nays (Hugo, Meier, Winkler), limits recreational vehicles to a maximum of 60 consecutive days on a parcel unless the owner obtains an annual temporary land use permit and provides an approved sanitary facility. The text clarifies allowable accessory structures, prohibits removal of wheels except for repairs, and bans park-model recreational vehicles outside licensed campgrounds. The ordinance also allows issuance of annual land-use permits (valid through December 31 of the issuing year) with sanitary accommodations such as an external sanitary system or an approved porta-potty documented by a sanitary permit.
Pat Virtues, the county’s zoning administrator, explained the ordinance language and the board voted to adopt it following Land & Water Resources Committee recommendation. The ordinance will take effect the day after passage and publication as required by law.
