Shorewood board authorizes eminent domain step for Saddle Road project; approves MFT engineering contract

Public Works reported progress on two roadway initiatives at the Aug. 27 meeting: staff recommended authorizing eminent domain to acquire a remaining parcel needed for the Saddle Road and bridge reconstruction project to avoid project delays, and the board approved both the ordinance authorizing acquisition and the waiver of a second reading.
Separately, staff presented a professional-services proposal from Christopher Burke Engineering for phase-2 design and phase-3 construction services for Shorewood's 2025 MFT resurfacing program. The contract amount was approved not to exceed $111,860; staff said the FY25/26 resurfacing budget is expected to be approximately $1.6 million and the project targeted roughly 2.8 miles of roadway including Edgewater North, Kipling Town and River Oaks Estates.
Public Works explained negotiations with one remaining property owner had stalled and that initiating eminent domain proceedings would allow the project to move forward while negotiations continue in parallel. "In order to continue with our project in a timely manner, our land acquisition consultants recommend that we pursue eminent domain," staff said. Trustees approved the ordinance and directed staff to proceed.
Both items were approved by roll call and staff will return with acquisition filings and construction schedules.
