Glassport Fire Department gets FEMA grant for fitness center; state study recommends stipend program

Council heard that the fire department will receive a FEMA grant to build a fitness center in the first half of 2025 and that a PA Fire and Emergency Services Institute staffing study recommends enacting a stipend program to staff the station.
During the Fire Department report, Councilman Paul Trunzo said the department had 44 calls in December and 596 calls for 2024 and completed 1,258 man-hours of training. Trunzo told council: "The department was able to obtain a FEMA grant for a new fitness center which will be completed within the first half of 2025." He also reported the department obtained a staffing study from the Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute recommending a stipend program to staff the fire station; the department is pursuing funding options to enact the recommendation.
The Senior Center update noted that computer classes began Jan. 13 (Mondays, 10 a.m.–noon, ten weeks) with 25 participants; interior work on the center is delayed due to contractor illness and an emergency job. Free tax-preparation services and 2025 dues collection were also announced.
