Shelby County commissioners approved a capital appropriation and five-year contract for the Sheriff's Office to replace its body-worn camera and in-car video system after the department reported persistent problems with the incumbent vendor. In committee and on the floor staff described incidents in which vendor upgrades resulted in lost video files and prolonged outages.
A Sheriff's Office representative described the vendor's 2023 upgrade that "lost every one of our videos" and later failed to restore approximately 20,000 files; the department said repeated technical problems undermined confidence in continued service. The new contract with Axon Enterprise, Inc. (Item 12) was presented as an emergency CIP purchase and approved with bipartisan support; commissioners asked questions about vendor demographics and procurement process.
