Residents urge alternatives to costly Road Commission millage, cite tax burden

Dozens of residents used the public comment period to press the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners for lower‑cost alternatives to a proposed Road Commission building and related millage. Angelo Poli said the community could not afford the request, stating that "the amount of money is excessive for the community and other options need to be provided." Several other commenters echoed concerns that additional taxes would be onerous for residents on fixed or limited incomes.
Speakers proposed a range of alternatives. Karen Mackenzie noted a disclosed $2.6 million in gas tax revenue and suggested allocating $1 million per year toward the building to reduce the millage burden. Others urged refurbishing existing structures, privatizing some services, or seeking bonds and grants rather than a direct tax increase. Several township officials and a CPA present said funding responsibilities and calculations were complex and required clearer explanation to voters.
Board members acknowledged the level of public concern and asked the Road Commission to return with additional, lower‑cost options and clearer funding scenarios before placing a measure on the ballot. No millage question was placed before voters at the meeting.
