Architect: Kalkaska County road facility redesign cuts size but raises projected cost to $29M

Hobbs & Black architect Martin Ruiter told the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners on March 26 that a revised plan for a new County Road Commission facility would shave square footage but increase the project price. "what was $23,000,000.00 would now be $29,000,000.00," Ruiter said while reviewing a site and floor plan with commissioners and the public.
Ruiter outlined per‑area cost estimates used in the budget: mechanical space at $187 per square foot, office space at $300 per square foot, parking at $140 per square foot and wash bay area at $174 per square foot. He also included a demolition allowance of $10 per square foot for the existing structure to be removed after the new facility is operational, and described the new floor plan as "very light" with features sized for inclement weather and maintenance operations.
Commissioners and Road Commission leaders said the existing building has age and condition problems that affect operations and safety, but several commissioners and members of the public pressed for options with lower costs or alternative funding before moving to a ballot millage. The board asked the Road Commission to return with additional alternatives and clarifications on scope and financing prior to any decision on a public vote.
