Sheffield board declines county policing co-op with neighboring villages

President Mary Lanham reopened discussion on a proposed co-op with the villages of Buda and Neponset to jointly hire a Bureau County sheriff's deputy. She said the other two towns currently have no policing and that costs would be split among participating communities and rise each year.
Trustees concluded that while additional county coverage would be beneficial, the expense and the fact that ordinance enforcement would not be part of the deputy's duties made the arrangement unattractive. Trustee Pratt, seconded by Trustee Adams, moved "to not accept the Co-op (with Buda & Neponset) Policing opportunity with Bureau County." The motion carried with AYES: Adams, Corwin, Pratt, Price, Yepsen; NAYS: None; ABSENT: DeVoss (MOTION CARRIED 5-0).
The board noted hope that the village's current police department could be enhanced in future months, but no staff direction or funding plan was adopted at the meeting.
