Gladstone council agrees to narrower fireworks hours, to add burn-ban language

The Gladstone City Council agreed to revise the city’s fireworks ordinance language and permitted hours during the July 6 meeting. The council instructed City Attorney Christina Wenko to draft an amendment to Section 4.0405 to set fireworks use to end at 11:59 PM on July 4 and to add an allowance from December 31 at 3:00 PM to January 1 at 2:00 AM. A Deputy from the Sheriff’s Department recommended including language making fireworks use contingent on fire-index conditions and burn bans; the council accepted that recommendation and asked Christina to include it in the draft.
Auditor Maria Kolling noted the current ordinance language derives from a 2008 amendment and the amended language does not appear in the 2020 Ordinance Book, prompting Christina’s advice that an amendment will be required and recommending a review of the entire section for additional updates. Maria will post notice for the First Reading in August once the Attorney prepares the draft language.
