Devonshire Elementary showcases student leadership, multicultural engagement

Devonshire Elementary staff and students delivered a multimedia presentation to the Skokie SD 68 Board of Education on March 20, highlighting programs meant to strengthen inclusion, leadership and family engagement.
Presenters described cross-grade work in writing and a mentor-based 'check-in/check-out' system used to set student goals and track daily progress. As one presenter said, "We are excited to give you a little update about our Devonshire highlights." Music teacher Bridal Patel described weekly mindfulness practices for staff and a second-grade musical that taught tempo and dynamics by having students teach parents the musical concepts.
Students and parents shared examples of electives and student media: the "Dolphin News Network," publishing parties and a fifth-grade 'wax museum' where students presented biographies. PTA representative Jody Ariver and parent Barbara Harris told trustees the school's multicultural night brought the community together, with organizers estimating between 200 and 300 attendees and plans to hold the event again on May 22.
The presentation emphasized family-school collaboration, bilingual programming and service-learning partnerships. Board members thanked presenters and noted the showcase connected directly to district strategic priorities around cultural responsiveness and inclusion.
