Kalkaska commissioners to send proposed data-center moratorium to Planning Commission after residents urge pause

Residents and Zoom participants told the Committee of the Whole they wanted the county to pause approvals of data-center projects to allow time for study and public input. Rachael Overmire and others said a moratorium would give the county time to research environmental impacts and ensure protections for natural and agricultural lands.
Administrator Patrick Whiteford presented an example moratorium for Board review and the Committee reached consensus to move the proposed moratorium to the Kalkaska County Planning Commission for input, review and recommendations. No opposition was recorded; the Planning Commission’s feedback is expected before the Board considers action at its April 15 regular meeting.
