Public comment at the April 8 Committee of the Whole focused on a proposed building for the Kalkaska County Road Commission and the commission’s funding and governance. Multiple residents said the building as proposed is too elaborate, questioned use of Michigan Transportation Fund (MTF) dollars to repay building debt and urged the Board to require greater transparency from the Road Commission.
Angelo Poli told commissioners he did not agree with an “elaborate building” and objected to using MTF funds intended for road maintenance to pay building debt. Antonio Poli and Melissa Poli echoed concerns about transparency and suggested the Road Commission should be elected rather than appointed. Several speakers suggested less expensive facility options and better public access to the Road Commission budget and wage information.
County Administrator/CFO Patrick Whiteford relayed a letter from the Kalkaska County Road Commission (dated April 3, 2026) reporting that the Road Commission had rescinded a ballot proposal and was researching other funding options, including anticipated state funding in 2027. Commissioner David Comai said the county may not be guaranteed state funding; Commissioner Robert Baldwin urged finding a less costly plan while noting difficulties hiring contractors for roadwork. The Board reached no final decision at the Committee meeting and moved related agenda items to the April 15 regular meeting for formal consideration.
