Wheat Ridge Chamber asks for $60,000 in 2027 and raises idea of merging business groups

The Wheat Ridge Chamber asked council for $60,000 in city support for 2027, presenting the request on Aug. 3 as funding for membership growth, marketing, event management and contractor compensation.
Robert Ham, the chamber’s representative, said the chamber now supports nearly 200 members and that the requested funds would help expand programming and administrative capacity. "By allocating the requested funds to the Wheat Ridge Chamber of Commerce, the city will be reinforcing its commitment to creating a robust business ecosystem," he said, reading from the organization’s memo and noting the chamber’s intent to support both large and small businesses.
Ham also described early exploratory work to investigate combining the chamber and the Wheat Ridge Business Association, noting overlap that creates confusion for businesses and a potential efficiency case for joining. Council members welcomed discussion and suggested facilitated strategic conversations; several councilors expressed support for a neutral facilitator to assess a possible merger, and the chamber said it had set aside some budget for facilitation.
Councilors praised the chamber’s programming and recommended alignment with the city's economic prosperity plan during strategic planning and budget decisions. Staff and council will consider the chamber’s request as part of the outside‑agency review schedule.
