Skokie D69 board approves 2026–27 school calendar over one dissent

Revisions from earlier drafts add a full week off for Thanksgiving, additional early-release days to support literacy curriculum implementation, and a non-attendance day on Jan. 4, 2027. The first student attendance day is set for Aug. 24, 2026 (early release); the last day is projected as June 9, 2027, pending emergency closure days.
Dr. Mark Chao moved to approve the calendar and Mr. Devin Savage seconded. Roll-call votes were Ayes: Freeman, Marsden, Bair, Khabeer, Chao, Savage; Nays: England. The Board discussed coordination with township elementary districts and the need to align break weeks and start dates for region-wide consistency.
Board members said the calendar changes aim to balance instructional time with district priorities for literacy implementation and alignment with neighboring districts.
