Trustee Luciano convened the Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Sept. 26, 2024, where staff updated members on local commercial activity and the village‑supported YMCA project. The YMCA was described as a 60,000‑square‑foot facility with a swimming pool, basketball courts, exercise equipment and meeting rooms, with an anticipated opening in April 2026. According to minutes, Shorewood residents will not pay an initial membership fee and will receive discounted rates for activities.
Committee members asked about the village’s financial commitment to the YMCA. Staff stated the village contributed $10 million from the capital fund as a total commitment toward the facility, matching YMCA funds. When asked where the capital‑project funds originated, staff said the village sold bonds totaling $8.2 million to fund capital projects. The meeting also included shorter business updates: X GOLF (under construction next to Marshalls) will feature eight golf simulators and a restaurant serving alcohol; Dollar Tree is under construction next to Aldi and is expected to open in roughly six months; and We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym has recently opened and offers classes, open play and private rentals.
The committee did not take formal action on any development approvals at the meeting. Village staff demonstrated the municipal website and reminded residents about resources for reporting issues and watching Village Board meetings live.
