A prolonged public and commissioner discussion during the Brazos County Commissioners Court focused on long-vacant positions at the county's Expo Center and how those hires would affect the center's finances. Precinct 4 resident Peter Mitchell pressed county staff for data on how filling positions would increase revenue, saying the expo's operating costs for fiscal year 2026 were "about $3,050,000" while revenue was "1,600,000," leaving a taxpayer-supported deficit he estimated at about $1,400,000.
Expo staff explained some positions had been vacant for months and that interim staffing had stretched existing employees. Jacqueline Foster, the Expo operations lead, said the clerk position "has been vacant since, May '25," and that the receptionist duties had been covered by an administrative assistant moved later to a separate office. HR's Rhianna McConathy and budget officer Nina Payne advised caution about using temporary or student workers for roles that include bookkeeping or continuous financial duties.
Commissioners discussed alternatives including combining duties, hiring part-time or student workers for front-desk duties, increasing pricing, pursuing naming-rights agreements, and using answering services or AI for some functions. After debate, the court voted against filling the Clerk 3 position and against the full-time receptionist hire but approved the assistant fair manager (a position candidates had come through the fair's internship pipeline) and an event coordinator position.
Peter Mitchell and other commenters repeatedly asked for linked documentation and presentation slides to be made available online to improve transparency; he said much of the information presented previously was not posted and required photographing slides to retain the material. Commissioners asked staff to collaborate with HR and budget to explore hybrid roles and report back to the court.
