City Manager Paul Grimes reported the results of the annual point-in-time (PIT) homelessness count to the Visit McKinney board, saying the community's count rose to 240 people this year from 213 in 2025. "We had 240 this year that were counted homeless, up from 213 in 2025," Grimes said.
Grimes explained the PIT is a nationwide methodology conducted at a single point in time using outreach teams who interview individuals, verify shelter status and classify people as sheltered or unsheltered. He said of the 240 counted this year, 182 were in temporary housing and 58 were unsheltered. Board members asked for methodological details and Grimes described personal-contact verification and collaboration with local homeless coalitions.
The board discussed how population growth and housing costs can contribute to increases in PIT figures. Grimes said staff will continue outreach and that comparisons over time should account for rising population and economic pressures.
