The Port Clinton City Council voted 6-0 on Aug. 3, 2026 to adopt Resolution 26-10, a renewal of a 1.9-mill property tax levy designed to provide revenue for fire service needs. The action came during a special meeting called to handle time-sensitive resolutions that must be certified to the county board of elections by Aug. 5, 2026.
Councilors waived the three required readings and proceeded to adoption after a short discussion about the levy’s intended uses. An agency official explained that, as a statutory city, the council “literally can only use language that’s in the revised code,” and that prior attempts to insert more specific language for equipment had been replaced by statutory wording at the board of elections. The official said the renewal levy would primarily help “keep the lights on” for the fire department, and that purchasing a new fire truck would depend on additional general-fund transfers or outside grant funding.
The motion to adopt Resolution 26-10 was moved by Council member (S3) and seconded; the clerk recorded a roll-call vote of six yes, zero no. The council’s action requests the Ottawa County auditor to certify current tax valuation and estimate the dollar amount the renewal would generate, as required under Ohio Revised Code Section 5705.19(I).
