The assistant superintendent for business, Ms. Kahan, presented the district—s proposed expenditure budget for 2026 0'7, saying: "The total proposed budget is $122,314,624." She summarized the three components of the budget (capital, administrative and program) and said the program component totals about $101,500,000.
Kahan explained how the district plans to close a gross gap of $7,570,000 by increasing the use of reserves to $4,000,000 and identifying $3,570,000 in reductions. "We have also increased the use of reserves to $4,000,000 to close the gap," she said. She added the allowable tax levy for the 2026 0'7 school year "is just over $81,500,000" and that the proposed levy equates to a 2.42% increase that "does not pierce the cap."
The presentation covered anticipated cost pressures including a projected 10% rise in medical insurance and continued debt-service obligations tied to recent bonding. Ms. Kahan told the board the district—s capital component exceeds $12 million and that some bond payments will be covered by bond anticipation notes until projects are completed and permanently bonded.
Next steps: the district scheduled a budget hearing for May 6 and the annual budget vote and trustee election for May 19 (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) with polling at Connolly School and Glen Cove High School, and committed to additional community outreach prior to the vote.
