Student board member highlights transportation and transition gaps, requests more life-skills support

Isaiah Barrett, the board’s ex officio student member, summarized student roundtable feedback: many students reported improved coping skills and supports but flagged transportation safety (drivers/staff sometimes failing to stop at a posted stop sign), staff language/professional conduct, unauthorized leaving of classrooms and theft of personal items. Isaiah asked for expanded life-skills programming and more emphasis on real-world transition supports to prepare students for independent living and employment.
Board and staff responded by noting existing transition practices (linking family workers and IEP/CSE meetings prior to discharge), and staff encouraged students to report concerns so the school can act. Trustees said vocational and micro-credential programs are part of the district’s strategy to improve transitions and will continue to explore step-down and supervised independent living options with the agency.
