Principal Rachel presented the school’s key performance indicators, saying the campus serves primarily 9th- and 10th-grade students and that although average reading levels remain below grade expectations, the school continues to offer Regents-level coursework and alternative accountability measures that better reflect the student population.
On safety and interventions, Rachel said physical interventions are now at a low for January and attributed the trend to trusting staff-student relationships, expanded therapeutic crisis intervention training and proactive support teams. She explained the district differentiates between leaving the building without authorization (13 different students) and formal incidents that require a restraint. "We define it as out of sight for 20 minutes, which is the standard of justice set," she said, and described a point-level system to recognize desirable student behaviors.
Board members asked about the composition of incidents (whether a small number of students account for repeated events); staff clarified the counts represent 13 different students. The board praised staff for declines in interventions and asked staff to continue providing enrollment and vocational access data in future KPI packets.
