Board says water is safe after NYSDOH flags surface-water intrusion; engineering interviews to follow

The Green Island Village Board discussed a New York State Department of Health review that, officials said, found signs of surface-water getting into parts of the village distribution system. Chair said the department was not declaring the water unsafe but that the village must change treatment processes to meet the new findings.
"The New York State Department of Health has said that we are in violation of the way that we process our our water," the Chair said, adding that "it's gonna be a multimillion dollar project." The board said staff issued an RFP for engineering services, received multiple replies, narrowed them to three firms and will conduct interviews before voting on an award or calling a special meeting if deadlines require it.
Trustees recounted the village's water history, noting past well collapses and a period when the village obtained water from Cohoes Water. Members discussed possible surface-water sources and emphasized the practical limits of local authority: "we gotta do what they tell us to do," the Chair said. Board members reiterated that daily testing continues and that treated water remains safe, while also warning the procurement and capital costs may be substantial.
The board did not vote on a firm at the meeting; staff said interviews were not completed and the item will be tabled until after interviews or handled at a special meeting to meet state deadlines.
