Council approves animal-code updates and backs Cochise County shelter in Huachuca City

The Huachuca City Council on Jan. 8 authorized draft ordinance changes to the town’s animal code and voted to submit a letter stating the town supports a proposed Cochise County animal shelter in Huachuca City.
Chief Berry explained that the proposed changes would remove portions of the code no longer relevant to an animal shelter and would make it easier to work with Cochise County if a county-run shelter were established in town. Council then approved preparing the code amendments.
Manager Suzanne Harvey said collaboration with Cochise County "would be a benefit to the town," and the council authorized the submission of a letter expressing support for the proposed county shelter. The motion to authorize the letter was moved by Johann Wallace, seconded by Christy Hirshberg, and passed unanimously. The minutes do not include draft ordinance text or the letter’s full language.
Council did not vote on funding for the shelter or on placing a municipal shelter; the action was limited to drafting local-code amendments and providing a supportive letter to Cochise County.
