Floyd County planning commissioners tour Corn Belt Power Cooperative battery storage site

Floyd County Planning and Zoning Commission members Guy Carpenter, Candice Brandau Larson, Dean Tjaden and Ben Rottinghaus conducted an informational site visit on June 10, 2026 to the Corn Belt Power Cooperative Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at 1454 110th Street, recorded in the minutes as south of Hampton. The minutes state, "The purpose of the site visit was to improve the Commission’s understanding of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)." The visit is recorded as informal and did not constitute a formal meeting session of the Commission.
Commission members observed the facility, which the minutes describe as enclosed by chain-link fencing and consisting of three BESS units. Corn Belt Power Cooperative staff Mike Thatcher and Andy Stalzer, together with Tesla Energy representative Galen Wu, provided a general overview of system operations and answered questions from Commission members. The minutes note that other members of the public were in attendance. No formal action was taken; the site visit concluded after approximately one hour.
