The Village of Green Island Board of Trustees on a voice vote ratified an agreement with an engineering firm to prepare a Green Innovation Grant submittal for a village‑wide water meter replacement project.
A staff member described the project as a response to large unmetered water losses identified in a recent North End water study. "The total cost of the project is going to be about $600,000," the staff member said, adding that "this grant should allow us, if awarded, up to 75% of that." The board approved moving forward with the firm’s $7,000 contract amendment so the grant packet could be completed by the April 11 deadline.
Staff said replacing mechanical meters with radio/electronic drive‑by reads will allow monthly reads (billed quarterly) and faster identification of spikes and leaks, reducing unmetered loss and lowering labor for manual reads. The staff member noted neighboring communities recouped meter costs within about five years.
The board ratified the agreement by voice vote. Trustees said the grant is time sensitive and that an environmental assessment form will accompany the submittal as required by the grant program.
