District to pause summer academic program and twilight GED offering amid budget tightening

The district announced it will not run its summer academic program next year and will pause the twilight program that offered GED completion, citing attendance and completion data as the rationale.
Miss Kayehan said the summer academic program had been funded with COVID relief for three years and then by the district in its fourth year; with an approximate attendance of about 68% she said "we believe it's not physically responsible to continue with the program" and the district will review other possibilities. On the twilight program she said enrollment was historically low with few completers, so "the data does not support continuing this program at this time."
Administrators clarified that reductions to summer programming do not affect mandated special-education Extended School Year (ESY) services: "the reduction in the summer programming has no impact on our special education services over the summer," a presenter said. The district described these cuts as reductions to nonmandated programs designed to help close the projected budget gap.
