District to cut 9th period at middle school; world-language rotation and math lab reduced

The Glen Cove district announced it will shift next year from a 9-period middle school day to an 8-period schedule, a change administrators said preserves total instructional time while removing one elective period.
Mr. Klotzke, who presented the middle-school schedule plan, explained the switch "does not mean reducing student time in class" and that the bell schedule would remain 8:10 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. He said the move will eliminate some 9th-period offerings that were added after 2022, including the 6th-grade world language rotation and the comprehensive math lab for 6th–8th graders. "So what will be eliminated in the move to the 8 period day are math lab at the 6th grade level and the world language experience," he said.
Administrators stressed that required middle-level courses (art, health, PE, home and careers, CTE requirements) will be preserved. Mr. Klotzke said the district intends to replace the universal math lab with more targeted AIS (academic intervention services) so students identified by internal benchmarks receive focused math and ELA support rather than enrolling all students in a supplemental math class.
Board members and community members asked how the change affects students in double-period math and advanced students; presenters said teachers have worked with both 8- and 9-period constructs previously and that interventions will be tailored to student need.
