Zoning board approves three summary items, including workforce housing conversion

The Newport Zoning Board on Dec. 23 adopted its summary calendar and approved three petitions on the consent agenda, the board chair said. The actions included a special-use permit for the Preservation Society of Newport County to convert part of a single-family dwelling into additional workforce housing.

John Russell, attorney for the Preservation Society, explained the work: “We are here this evening in front of you, to request, permission to convert an existing single family dwelling on the property to a 2 family dwelling for the purpose of workforce housing.” The board recorded that the property currently has a three‑bedroom unit used for seasonal workforce housing and that the proposed change would create a second three‑bedroom unit with separate ingress and egress and the requisite on‑site parking.

The board’s motion adopted staff findings and standard conditions: projects must be started and substantially complete within 12 months of the decision (or a timely extension requested) and all public‑notice invoices must be paid before recording. The consent motion passed unanimously.

The approvals were procedural and combined staff reports, application materials, and testimony; affected parties were told how to obtain the written decision and any conditions from the zoning office.
