During a technical exchange, commissioners asked whether the metal tiles were stamped or individual shingles, how seams behave, and whether edge profiles could match a wooden shingle exposure. An applicant representative described the fabrication process and customization options and invited commissioners to inspect large mockups on site.
"Those are individual shingles hand bent in basalt by GZO ripping and sheet metal," the project's representative said, explaining the pieces are cut and hand-bent, which allows varying the exposed height and edge thickness. Commissioners highlighted that visual thickness, color and matte, weathered finish are key to reading the roof as historically compatible.
Applicants and consultants also discussed performance differences: they said treated wood shingles require repeated fire-retardant reapplications that can void warranties and accelerate degradation, while metal was presented as a longer-lived option if it can be made to match historic proportions.
