Trustees press for more detail on after-school contracts and science-camp costs before approving consent items
Summary
Trustees asked staff to provide clearer contract descriptions—who is served, site locations and cost-per-student—before routinely approving contractor agreements. After discussion, the board approved the previously pulled item and asked staff to present more transparency going forward.

At the Aug. 7 meeting trustees pulled item 12c from the consent agenda to ask for more clarity about contractor agreements covering after‑school providers, field-trip vendors and institute coaching contracts.
Trustee Pagetian Brewster said she wanted to know which school sites vendors (for example FRR, YMCA and the Junior Museum and Zoo) would serve and where costs would be charged. "I would like to see more information ... specifically about these, I was wondering about the after school programs and with which school sites the FRR, YMCA ... are at," she said. Trustees and staff discussed adding a brief table to consent items showing the department requesting the contract, the funding source and a short description of service locations and per‑student or per‑school costs.
Staff acknowledged the request and said the district could include breakdowns such as total cost, district contribution, family contribution and cost per participant. Trustees noted the Sunnyvale Education Foundation helps subsidize science camp fees and wanted clear figures because parents and fundraisers are involved. After discussion the board voted by voice to approve item 12c; trustees asked that future consent materials include more contextual detail so the public can understand who benefits and where services are delivered.
The board did not alter the approved contracts at the meeting; staff said they would provide additional verification and contract detail going forward.
