Neighbors warn narrow single driveway would create safety, emergency-access risks

Multiple residents told the Kensington Zoning Board that a single narrow driveway serving three new homes would create traffic, emergency-response and safety problems for neighbors and park users.
Neighbors at the Kensington hearing told the zoning board the proposed plan’s single narrow access raised public-safety concerns for children, park users and emergency vehicles.
"The only access that has been mentioned to these proposed homes would be the very narrow driveway that exits directly across from our property," said Susan Lloyd (speaker 4), who urged the board to ensure any access "provides safe access for all its users and does not create unnecessary safety concerns for neighboring properties, including the park." She warned that the single entry point would serve residents, visitors, delivery trucks, contractors and emergency vehicles.
Other speakers echoed concerns about turn-around space, trash and recycling placement and whether fire trucks and ambulances could reliably get to homes accessed by a private drive. The board acknowledged these are standard issues for subdivision and site-plan review and said the planning/building staff and a civil engineer should verify whether design changes or additional safety improvements (for example a two-way entry or formal turnaround) would be required.
The board said these access and safety issues will be examined as part of its continued review and by the building and planning staff prior to the September meeting.
