District recommends comprehensive modernization for Cherry Chase Elementary; estimates and funding impacts shared

District facilities staff presented three scopes of work for Cherry Chase Elementary ranging from a limited critical repair package to a full comprehensive modernization. Staff recommended the comprehensive modernization (Option 2), estimating a project cost of roughly $45.5 million and saying the larger scope would bring classroom, restroom and outdoor‑learning spaces up to the district standard.
Chief Business Officer Mark McCarthy summarized the options and said replacing portables as part of a modernization can make the district eligible for developer‑fee funding to add permanent seats. He said that, after offsets, Measure C would still show a projected remaining balance in the tens of millions, but specifics depend on which option is chosen and on future state funding awards.
Parents and trustees supported a comprehensive approach. One parent asked whether new classrooms would be larger than existing portables; facilities staff replied that new classrooms would be full‑size (roughly similar to middle‑school classrooms, about 1,000 square feet) and that the project would also provide improved outdoor learning areas and updated teaching walls and windows.
Staff said the recommended Option 2 best aligns with the district’s equity‑of‑facilities priorities; they will return with detailed design, renderings and refined cost estimates and continue to coordinate timing with the district’s capital schedule.
